Read:

  • Read JFK's speech beginning on page 2 "To those old allies..." through page 4 "mankind's final war."
  • Pay attention to the technique JFK uses to get his tone across: REPITITION
  • Highlight or underline the words and phrases that are repeated throughout this part of the speech

Tone:

  • Look at your list of tone words. Choose 3-5 tone words from the list that best describe JFK's tone in this part of the speech.
  • How does JFK use REPITITION to get his tone across?
  • With your table, use this information to help you write a Tone Thesis Statement on the handout from last class period.

Read:

  • Watch the video of JFK delivering the final piece of his speech from the 4th page beginning "So let us begin anew..." and read through the end of the speech.

Tone Techniques:

  • Pay attention to the REPITITION used in this portion of the speech. Highlight or underline the words and phrases that are repeated.
  • Anaphora- repetition of a word or words at the beginning of two or more successive verses, clauses, or sentences.
  • Direct address- who is JFK directly talking to?

Individual Practice:

  • Complete the TONE THESIS handout discussing JFK's tone in this portion of the speech. What technique does he use to get this tone across? Write down evidence and commentary demonstrating this technique. Using all of this information, complete the TONE THESIS Statement on the handout.
